Jennifer Hawkins and Jake Wall Are Engaged.

FORMER Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins is engaged to her beau of seven years, Jake Wall, who popped the question with a $200,000 custom-made, Nic Cerrone diamond ring on New Year's Eve.

The Sunday Telegraph can exclusively reveal Wall, 27, proposed to Hawkins, 26, while on holiday at luxurious Linneaus Resort, a few kilometres outside of Byron Bay.

The couple met at Fanny's nightclub in Newcastle in 2003 when Hawkins was a model and Knights cheerleader.

Wall knew then he wanted to marry her, saying: "Marriage has crossed my mind. We're only young, but I think I'm definitely meant to be with her. I love her to death."

Since then, their lives have changed dramatically. There is no clearer indication of this than Wall's decision to sell the story of their engagement before he had even proposed to Hawkins. New Idea magazine is understood to have bought the story and was asked to pay up to $300,000.

"They are very happy. She's thrilled," a close friend said.

The loved-up pair has been enjoying the local hospitality, including dining at Quattro Restaurant on Wednesday. On Friday, they were spotted at O'Pes Restaurant. Hawkins appeared relaxed in a short black dress with a brown crocheted hat, while Wall wore a grey singlet and black shorts.

After eating a healthy meal of Mahi Mahi on a green papaya salad, they couldn't have looked more relaxed and casual as they left arm-in-arm.

It is understood Wall proposed later that night.

Cerrone's staff are believed to have worked overtime to have the ring ready for Wall to pick up on Boxing Day to take on the couple's holiday. "I can't comment on that story yet," Cerrone said. "It's a little bit difficult at the moment."

Hawkins' manager Sean Anderson did not return The Sunday Telegraph's calls.

In July, Hawkins revealed her five-year plan, which included starting a family. "Kids and marriage and all of that stuff," she said at the time.

"Well, maybe not in five years, but I mean in the near future - soon. It is definitely something I would like down the track and so would he."

Just a month later, the couple splashed out $1.8 million for an oceanfront block of land at North Curl Curl, near Narrabeen, to build their "dream home".

Wall's proposal put a positive spin on a tough week for Hawkins, who was dumped by Myer to showcase its brands at G'Day USA event in Los Angeles this month.

Granny held over killing of 3 Malaysians.

CHENNAI: A 67-year-old woman is believed to have plotted the killing of a Malaysian woman and her two young children in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, last November, police said.
The woman, now in police custody in Madurai, is the grandmother of the prime suspect in the triple murders, who is believed to have fled to Malaysia with four other suspects.

"We discovered the grandmother was the mastermind of the murders. She was the one who told them (suspects) to seek revenge on the deceased.

"All the seven accused under our custody have also revealed she had a hand in the crime.
"The bodies were initially buried in the woman's coconut plantation but later removed to another place," said Vadipatti police inspector P.R. Lakshmanan yesterday.

M. Adhila Banu, 24, her daughter Ajira Banu, 5, and son Mohd Aslan, 7, went missing from their home in Ramananthapura district on Nov 8.

Three days later, police discovered the highly decomposed bodies of the missing trio in a canal in Vadipatti, Madurai, about 150km from where they were abducted.

A probe revealed that the murders were linked to an old local gang war, and the three were killed to settle a score with Adhila's husband, who was last known to be working in Malaysia.

All the suspects are from Tamil Nadu.

The case, which kindled much media attention in South India, was transferred to the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) last week, under orders from the Madras High Court.

"Innocent children have been murdered due to the alleged enmity between two families.

"In such circumstances, this court is convinced that the CB-CID would be the competent agency to continue investigation and complete the same after taking the assistance of the Malaysian police to bring the culprits back to India," said Justice V. Periya-karuppan, who ordered the transfer of the case, reported Outlook India.com. -- Bernama

National goalie Khairul Fahmi gets a house from Kelantan govt.

KOTA BARU: National goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, who returned home Monday to Kampung Cherang here to a hero's welcome, has been promised a new house by the state government.
Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said the state had decided to present Khairul Fahmi with a new house as a mark of appreciation for his contribution to national football.
Khairul Fahmi shot to fame after saving a penalty shot by an Indonesian player im the second-leg final of the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup on Dec 29.
Malaysia took home the cup after beating Indonesia by a 4-2 aggregate.
Nik Aziz, who was among hundreds of people here to welcome Khairul Fahmi home, however, did not give details on the house or its cost.
Khairul Fahmi, 21, later said he was touched by the treatment accorded to him by the people and state government.
"I did not expect this kind of welcoming ceremony.
"I was really surprised because I did not know that they were planning this," he said, adding that he was accompanied by cars and motorcycles all the way from Machang to his village.
Khairul Fahmi had returned to Kelantan by road from Kuala Lumpur.
He said the ceremony was organised by the people in his village, particularly two of his good friends.
Asked about his sudden fame, Khairul said he felt a mix of tremendous pressure and expectation but would take it all in his stride.
"I will work harder this year despite the pressure and since I am still young, there is a lot to learn so that I can become a top-notch goalkeeper.
"My goal is to help Kelantan, if I am chosen into the state team, defend the Malaysia Cup, and win the League and FA Cup," he said.
